Loon
Final vector illustration created in Adobe Illustrator.
Marker rendering and color studies. The progression shows how early sketches needed to be refined to breakdown the essential shapes that makes the Loon's iconic head and neck lines. A major challenge was creating the movement of the water around the shapes. Notice how the horizon lines behind the long neck create depth as if the 2 dimensional loon is on a large lake.
Digital version printed from Epson SureColor P7000.

Loon Air Brush Version
The photos show the first gouache color being laid down on Cason board. It's hard to see but the fine lines are the transfer from the final pen line drawing found above.
Photo of the final air brush gouache on Cason board. The white lines dividing colors were laid down with ruling pens. The final looks beautiful and has the look of a silk screen print with matte inks.

About This Project

The "Loon" project was part of a continuing study to see how Charlie Harper's fantastic illustrations were designed. I started with some basic sketches and drawing wireframe pen outlines on marker paper using "highway curves" and moved on to marker color on marker paper to refine the design.

The next step was to create the airbrush painting in gouache and the the Ai digital version of the project. Highway curves are one of my favorite tools and have become indispensable in creating the long flowing curves that need to be cut for the air brush process and laying down the thin lines with ruling pens. The gouache paints lay down with a soft matte finish and almost look silk screened.
